Is your license plate hard to read? Pennsylvania drivers can be fined up to $100 for having a license plate that is deemed illegible. Luckily, AAA East Central, PA State Representative Emily Kinkead, the Allegheny County Police Department, and the Port Authority Police Department are partnering to check the legibility of license plates.

According to PENNDOT, a license plate is deemed illegible when:

  • One or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet away
  • If the registration plate shows any blistering, peeling, discoloration, or loss of reflectivity

If you think your license plate is illegible, check out the event at the AAA location at 4790 McKnight Road and get it checked for legibility! Emily Kinkead's office will be there alongside local authorities and AAA to help members of the general public assess license plate legibility. AAA membership is not required. If your plate is deemed illegible, you can get a new one for free. No appointment is necessary, however you will need to register at the table outside upon arrival at AAA North Hills to secure the service. For more information, contact AAA East Central's Safety Department at 412-365-7211.
